Wacky Ice Cream Flavors

March 18, 2013

Not all ice cream flavors are sweet, rich, and creamy. You probably already know this, but just to expand your horizons, we’ve discovered some of the wackiest ice cream flavors out there. Some will have you scrunching up your nose while others may bebizzare ice cream intriguing. Will you be searching for the recipe or battling a queasy stomach? Here they are… the world’s oddest ice cream flavors.

Buckwheat – Yes, the grain. This may sound like a healthy snack, but unless you consider the addition of buckwheat kernels enough to make a dessert healthy, it’s far from. Aside from the buckwheat and added honey, this ice cream flavor is made with milk, salt, sugar, cream, and eggs.

Parmesan Gelato – In our humble opinion, parmesan cheese has no place in the ice cream mix, but obviously our opinion isn’t shared by all. To make this cheesy dessert, a whole cup of fresh parmesan cheese and one pound of rock salt is blended with milk, cream, and sugar. Perhaps we should try this rendition to see if we like it — that is, if we can stomach it.

Orange, Buttermilk, and Mint – What ingredient doesn’t belong? Here at Praline’s, we love mint ice cream, and buttermilk ice cream and orange is always a seasonal favorite. But could we successfully blend these flavors together? We’re not sure. If so, we’d have to blend together Greek yogurt, buttermilk, orange juice, honey, and freshly chopped mint. Sounds healthy and maybe even tasty.

Sweet Potato – Nothing sounds better than sweet potato ice cream after a thanksgiving meal… or does it? This treat is made with whole sweet potatoes but that’s not all; agave nectar, oak milk and pie spices are also added. As tasty as this treat may be, could a potato-based ice cream really hit the spot?

Red Wine – This flavor takes ice cream to the next level. We’re curious: is it okay to sip red wine while eating this dessert, or would that be overkill? For you winos out there, not to worry, this flavor is authentic; two bottles of red wine, two cinnamon sticks, and black peppercorn are all it takes to make your ice cream buzz. Please eat responsibly.
