Putting the Brakes on Ice Cream Trucks?

Putting the brakes on an ice cream truck? It seems un-American.

So is that what is happening in a California city called, of all things, American Canyon?

Well, not exactly. There just may be a slowdown.

Ice cream and food trucks in American Canyon may soon be subject to new restrictions under a proposed ordinance approved by the area’s Planning Commission.

The big part of this proposed ordinance is when ice cream trucks would be forced to close up shop for the day. Ice cream trucks would be forced to shut down entirely once schools let out, regardless of their location in the city.

It seems parents might be behind this push to limit the number of hours ice cream trucks are allowed to roll down the streets. One report says parents of school-age children have voiced concerns about ice cream trucks parking outside or near area schools. It might be good for ice cream business, but parents say it is bad for the health of their children. It seems some parents are not happy that it’s easy for kids to have access to sugary treats on the way home from school.

Under the proposed ordinance, ice cream trucks would be forced to stop selling ice cream 15 minutes before school ends and one hour afterword. They would also need to stop selling ice cream after sunset.

The good news is, the trucks will still be allowed to stay open during the summer days.

But how much will the after school hours ban hurt area ice cream businesses? It remains to be seen. The American Canyon city council will take a look at the ordinance in the middle of March.

If you want to get great ice cream without worrying about driving hours, head down to the closest Praline’s. There are no restrictions on all the great flavors offered by Praline’s.
