How to Make the Perfect Ice Cream Sundae

May 24, 2016

ice cream sundaeAn ice cream sundae is sure to delight children and adults at any time of the year, but especially on a hot summer day. If you want to make sundaes with your family, here are some tips on traditional and unconventional toppings you can use to create the perfect frozen treat.

Choosing the Right Dish and Spoon

The first thing you will need is a dish for your sundae. The traditional choice is a glass dish. You can use an upright dish that has a wide opening and a short stem or a canoe-shaped glass dish. If you don’t have either of these, you can use a bowl. Just make sure the dish you use can hold enough ice cream and toppings for your sundae.

You will also need the right spoon. A long-handled spoon is the best choice because it will allow you to scrape every last bit of ice cream from the bottom of the dish.

Picking the Right Ice Cream and Toppings

The next step is to choose which flavor or flavors of ice cream you want to use. Vanilla is the traditional choice, but chocolate and strawberry are also popular. Choose a simple flavor that will serve as a good background to the rest of the ingredients in your sundae.

Next you need to choose your toppings. Drizzle some chocolate, caramel, butterscotch, or strawberry sauce over each scoop of ice cream or in a zigzag pattern. It is best to refrigerate the syrup first because that will make it thicker.

Choose other toppings for your sundae. You can add whipped cream, fruit (strawberries, pineapple, apple, oranges, berries, and mango are all good choices), nuts, and the candy of your choice. Then top it all off with a Maraschino cherry.
