Ice Cream Trends around the World

August 28, 2013

ice cream trendsDespite the economy, ice cream sales in the U.S. continue to rise. It seems as though nothing will stand between Americans and their ice cream. How does the same sweet treat fare in other lands? Here is how ice cream trends are changing in countries around the world, and a brief explanation as to what is happening.

South Korea – While ice cream sales have only increased in the U.S., they have not done the same in South Korea. Heavy rainfall and a change in the local diet has been damaging to ice cream sales. Unlike Americans, South Koreans don’t crave ice cream when it’s cold, and as increased rainfall lowers the average temperature, more locals are turning a blind eye to their-once favorite snack. Also, with more dessert treats available, ice cream has taken a backseat.

Singapore – In Singapore, locals are developing a palette for pricey, high-quality ice cream. They are purchasing more and more ice cream but not just any kind: the premium brands. The health conscious country has also seen a moving trend towards the healthier ice cream options, or ice cream with less sugar and less fat.

Japan – In wake of the Fukushima disaster, all residents and business owners were asked to cut back on energy consumption. At first, it was predicted that this request would ultimately harm ice cream sales, but this definitely did not happen; instead, ice cream sales skyrocketed. The reason? Many used ice cream products to cool down during the summer when their air conditioners were turned off.

Belgium – Unlike neighboring territories, Belgium ice cream sales are not affected by the weather or temperature. Belgians love anything that is sophisticated and accessible, a.k.a. anything that is popular and inexpensive. That being said, as the price of ice cream continues to drop, sales have only increased.
