How to Make Ice Cream Thaw Faster

November 1, 2016

how-to-thaw-ice-creamIce cream is a delicious treat that you can enjoy at any time of the year. If you have bought ice cream in containers at a supermarket to eat at home, you have most likely struggled at times to scoop it out and serve it. Ice cream that is frozen solid can be nearly impossible to scoop, which can be frustrating for you and your family and can also hurt your hand.

Here are some tips to help you thaw ice cream and make it easier to scoop. Be careful when thawing ice cream because melting it too much can cause you to wind up with a soupy mess, not the creamy bowl of sweetness you want to enjoy.

Hold the Ice Cream under Warm Water

One strategy is to hold the container of ice cream under warm running water. Put the closed container under the faucet so that water runs onto the lid. This will soften the ice cream on the top of the container that you will scoop first. Then turn the container to warm the sides near the lid. If you are worried about getting water into the container and winding up with watered down ice cream, you can open the container, cover the ice cream with a piece of plastic wrap, and then close it before you hold the container under water.

Thaw Ice Cream in the Microwave

Another way to heat your ice cream and make it thaw faster is to put it in the microwave. Put the ice cream in the microwave on the defrost setting and heat it for 5 to 10 seconds. Then check to see how much it has softened and figure out if you need to heat it more.

Cut Ice Cream and Let It Thaw at Room Temperature

If you are concerned about heat melting your ice cream too much, there is another way to make it thaw faster. Use a butcher knife or a knife with a serrated blade to cut around the inside of the container and slide the ice cream onto a surface that is clean and dry. Then cut the ice cream into pieces so it can soften at room temperature.
