Did you read the title carefully? We said fowl, not “foul.” Honestly, no matter how bizarre and strange a flavor is, we don’t think any of it is truly foul. Or maybe we spoke too soon.
A small town café in Japan that serves coffee and curry was inspired to do something, well, crazy. Since the café is home to some 36 pet birds, they thought, “Hey, we should make bird-flavored ice cream!” That’s right, we said bird-flavored. Here are some of their fowl flavors. Maybe you can try some if you’re ever across the pond.
Java sparrow – If you’re not convinced that bird-flavored ice cream will be as “delicious” as it sounds, try Java sparrow. All it is is vanilla ice cream mixed with a variety of whole grains. Since the Java sparrow is a chunky little guy, marshmallows are hidden inside the ice cream to give the pallet a plump, full-breasted experience. If you don’t mind the marshmallow surprise, this treat may actually be pretty tasty.
Parakeet – You’re familiar with this bird. Its bright green body and yellow crown make it a popular choice pet in America, but could a parakeet-inspired ice cream flavor be a hit? We’ll let you be the judge. Similar to Java sparrow, Parakeet ice cream is made with vanilla ice cream and grains. Since parakeets are lively and active birds, the ice cream has to live up to its name. To spice things up, apple and honey are added. If you’re looking for something on the sweeter side, parakeet is the way to go.
Cockatiel – What do you get when you mix vanilla ice cream, honey, apple, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds? The flavor of a cockatiel, of course! The purpose of replacing mixed grains with pumpkin and sunflower seeds is to give this flavor a rambunctious taste that, and we quote, “Tastes like you’re sleeping with your mouth open and a cockatiel runs over your face and gets its leg in your mouth.” Yum.
As bizarre as these flavors sound, we have to admit that the idea is genius and the flavors themselves sound like they have great potential. Too bad this little bird-friendly café is on the other side of the globe. You’ll just have to make your own fowl-flavored ice cream at home. Or maybe you’ll just stick to high quality, Connecticut made flavors from Praline’s; it’s your choice!
