Sometimes when you take a container of ice cream out of the freezer, it is hard as a rock and impossible to scoop, even if you let it sit out at room temperature for a while. This can be frustrating for you and your family, and it can also cause pain if you keep trying to scoop but the ice cream just won’t budge.

Fortunately, there are some strategies you can use to quickly thaw ice cream and make it easier to scoop without turning it into a soupy mess. These techniques are often used in ice cream shops and restaurants.

Strategies to Quickly Soften Ice Cream

Take the container of ice cream out of the freezer and let it sit at room temperature to soften for a few minutes. Don’t leave it out for more than five minutes, or it will be too soft.

Put the ice cream in the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix it on medium speed with a paddle attachment until the ice cream has a smooth, creamy texture. Don’t mix it too long, or it will get soupy. Once the ice cream is creamy, you can easily scoop and serve it.

If you are using a simple flavor like vanilla, you can mix in some other ingredients while the ice cream is in the mixing bowl. Experiment with fruit or berries, candy, crushed cookies, chocolate sauce, nuts, or crushed sugar cones.

If you do not have a stand mixer, there is another simple way to soften ice cream. You can put it in a bowl, break it up into pieces using a knife, and then mash it with a potato masher. After the ice cream is smooth, you can use a wooden spoon to stir in toppings. This method takes longer. If the ice cream gets too soft, you can put it back in the freezer for about 10 minutes before you serve it.
