May 14, 2013

You love ice cream, don’t you? Well, if so, then you probably think that you know everything there is to know about it too, right? You know all the best flavors, you know which brands ice cream facts are made with the best ingredients, and you know that Americans eat the most ice cream out of everyone. Well, bravo, you do know a lot! However, you don’t know everything. Here are some ice cream facts that just might shock even you.

It’s Healthy – Did we just say that? Yes, we did. Although ice cream is a dessert that, in large quantities, can really make weight gain inevitable, if eaten in moderation, ice cream can actually be beneficial to your health. Here is why. Ice cream is packed full of Vitamin D and calcium, two nutrients essential for healthy, strong bones. A half a cup is all you need, so don’t use this as an excuse to overindulge. Having said all this, ice cream sprinkled with plenty of toppings is not healthy. Most toppings are made of sugar and don’t add any nutritional value.

Milk to Ice Cream – It takes roughly 12 pounds of milk to make one gallon of ice cream. Think about that next time you’re at the supermarket and you’re deciding between flavors in the ice cream section. Look at all of those gallons upon gallons of ice cream; that’s a lot of milk.

America’s Favorite? Okay so you already know that Americans eat the most ice cream. While this is true, this doesn’t mean that ice cream is America’s favorite dessert. That’s right, there is another dessert that American’s prefer over ice cream — cookies. Shocked? You shouldn’t be. Warm, fresh baked, gooey chocolate chip cookies are sold more frequently than ice cream.
