Have a Sundae at Praline’s on National Whipped Cream Day

January 3, 2017

January 5 is National Whipped Cream Day. Whipped cream can add some extra flavor to any dessert and can make any treat go from simple to special. National Whipped Cream Day is celebrated on the birthday of Aaron “Bunny” Lapin, who invented Reddi-wip in 1948.

Flavored Whipped Cream

Whipped cream can be plain or can be flavored with any of a number of ingredients. It is often sweetened and can contain vanilla, coffee, chocolate, orange, or other flavors. Whipped cream is also sometimes referred to as Chantilly cream or crème Chantilly.

History of Whipped Cream

In the 16th century, whipped cream was sweetened and had other ingredients added to give it flavor. Back then, it was called milk snow or snow cream. Naturally separated cream was whipped with willow or rush branches. That would create foam that was skimmed off the surface. The process could take an hour or longer.

The term “whipped cream” began to be used in English in 1673. It was still known as snow cream throughout the 17th century.
