Beer & Ice Cream

beer ice creamLots of people like beer. Lots and lots and lots of people like ice cream. So is there any reason these two flavors shouldn’t be married in tasty matrimony?

Well, for one reason, it may seem a little unappealing to people. Just because two things are great does not mean they will taste great together.

However, some people do enjoy this taste combination. And, for those who do, beer-flavored ice cream can be found. Spots around the country are offering up beer-flavored ice cream. The types of beer vary. These concoctions are not coming from local craft breweries. Many small dairies around the country are experimenting with beer and ice cream. In fact, some artisan ice cream makers are coming together with local craft brewers to create new flavors and combinations.

The experimentation leads to creativity. There are ice creams out there being made with Belgian ale and apricot jam. Or how about a combination of vanilla and creamy milk stout. One brewer started with a cherry wood malt then added cashews, peanuts and Spanish peanuts along with rosemary, brown sugar and salt. This all went into an ice cream. Sound good? You’d have to taste it to truly judge. Some folks seem to like it. It’s a best seller at an ice cream shop in Ohio.

This beer-and-ice-cream thing has extended to across the pond. One European ice cream brand conducted some research and found that people are looking for less traditional ice cream flavors.

The mixture of alcohol and beer is not as common as the mixture of fruit and ice cream but it’s not unheard of, either. Praline’s feature flavors like Rum Raisin and White Russian. Rum Raisin is rum-flavored ice cream with rum-soaked cherries. White Russian features light coffee ice cream with vodka and coffee liquor.
